CATARACT SURGERY AND REFRACTIVE EXPECTATIONS

According to this study "Patients who already wear spectacles expect to need them after cataract surgery. Those not already wearing spectacles do not expect to need them. This latter group is at particular risk for refractive disappointment and complaint."

Seems like a no brainer, but I guess we shouldn't be surprised when a patient didn't need glasses before cataract surgery and now needs them.

  1. This study certainly pans out in clinical practice.
I am VERY careful to tell my presbyopic emmetropes or near-emmetropes that they may need glasses despite all of our careful measurements. I also explain that IOL exchange is a possiblility although it adds risk. Giving the patient realistic expectations often diffuses their dissapointment with having to wear glasses after cataract surgery.
