Studies have found that sleeping in the supine position may increase intraocular pressure by as much as 6mmHg. Since we spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping, this can significantly increase the risk of optic nerve damage in patients with advanced glaucoma.
According to this study, sleeping with two pillows, to elevate the head, decreases intraocular pressure by about 20% (approximately 3mmHg) from what it is in the supine position. This is a no cost solution that may make a difference in these glaucoma patients.
