CATARACT SURGERY IMPROVES QUALITY OF LIFE IN ELDERLY

Vision-related quality of life, cognitive impairment, and depressive mental status are all strongly related with each other. Cataract surgery significantly improved vision-related quality of life in elderly patients, and cognitive impairment and depressive mental status also improved in parallel with improvement in vision-related quality of life.

Cataract surgery depends on the interference of the cataract in the daily life. Not all cataracts need to be removed immediately; many people get along well even with glasses or lenses. Many a times the surgery can be delayed or avoid altogether, but with elderly people it is better if they do it. Vision problems may lead to accident, falls, injuries and depression. Instead of inviting host of other problems, it is better to have the surgery done and improve the quality of life.
