COMMON ACNE DRUG CONTRAINDICATED BEFORE AND AFTER LASIK

According to this article in Ocular Surgery News:
"Isotretinoin, a topical medication commonly prescribed for acne, should be contraindicated for patients after LASIK surgery, a recent commentary in a dermatology publication suggests. Just as patients should stop using the acne medication at least 6 months before LASIK surgery, they also should not be given the medication for 6 months after surgery."

 New research shows that keratoconus may be linked to certain inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema (atopic dermatitis), psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and hives. People with these conditions were more likely to develop keratoconus than those without them. Rosacea did not show this connection. One possible reason is eye rubbing , which is common in itchy skin conditions and can slowly damage the cornea over time. According to a review of a study in Cornea: “Parents of the younger patients must be clearly informed at the time of corneal cross-linking therapy (CXL) that seven to 10 years after CXL, the corneal collagen turnover may induce loss of CXL effect duration with new KC instability or progression, so the treatment could be potentially repeated if necessary in nearly 25% of the patients,”

IMPLANTABLE COLLAMER LENS APPEARS BETTER THAN LASIK OR PRK FOR MODERATE TO HIGH MYOPIC PATIENTS

http://www2.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab007679.html The results of this review suggest that the implantable lens (ICL) is are safer than excimer laser (the laser used in PRK and LASIK) surgical correction for moderate to high myopia in the range of -6.0 to -20.0 D and ICL is preferred by patients. ICL surgery resulted in better corrected visual acuity, better contrast sensitivity, and improved patient satisfaction. ICL may also be considered in cases where the patient has more moderate near-sightedness (in the range of -3.00 to -6.00). My personal experience with ICL gives me a high level of confidence in this procedure and the surgeon with whom I co-manage. All patients I have seen have been 20/20 or better.
