STATIN USE REDUCES RISK OF OPEN ANGLE GLAUCOMA

This study reported in Ophthalmology concludes:

Statin use was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of OAG among persons with hyperlipidemia. Given the mounting evidence of statin protection against OAG including both basic science and observational clinical studies, an interventional prospective study might provide additional insights into the role of statins in the prevention of early OAG.

CONTACT LENS THAT MONITORS INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE IN GLAUCOMA PATIENTS

This study in JAMA tested a contact lens for use in monitoring intra-ocular pressure and concluded:

Repeated use of the contact lens sensor demonstrated good safety and tolerability. The recorded IOP patterns showed fair to good reproducibility, suggesting that data from continuous 24-hour IOP monitoring may be useful in the management of patients with glaucoma.

ZEAXANTHIN AND LUTEIN SUPPLEMENTATION MAY PREVENT PROGRESSION OF AMD

According to this article in Opthalmology:

Among patients with early AMD, supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin improved macular pigment, which played a causative role in boosting visual function and might prevent the progression of AMD. Future studies are required to evaluate the effect of these carotenoids on the incidence of late AMD.

PLAYING OUTDOORS HALVES THE RISK OF NEAR SIGHTED PROGRESSION
