DIABETES LECTURE NOTES

These are a few points from Diabetes lecture by Nicky Holdeman, M.D. from Vision Expo.

About 1/3 of children born now will become diabetic eventually (50% of Hispanic newborns).

30% of diabetics don't know they have it.

Diabetes is a major risk factor for the development of those conditions that are most responsible for mortality.

Retinopathy can pre date the systemic diagnosis of diabetes by 6 years.

Instead of borderline, IDDM, & NIDDM classifications, we should use pre-diabetes, Type 1 & Type 2.

Fasting blood glucose > 126 mg/dl, casual blood glucose > 200 mg/dl and FBS between 100-125mg/dl is pre-diabetes. FBS between 90& 99 is still risk for cardiovascular disease.

Metabolic Syndrome: obesity, increased FBS, BP, and cholesterol.

Type 1 diabetes is autoimmune and oral medications won't help. Type 2 frequently have no symptoms.
